The number of non-remunerated overtime hours worked by specialists and executives in Germany is falling. This is the result of an international survey conducted by the StepStone online job market, in which 9880 German executives and specialist took part. The study showed that for 79% of interviewees overtime hours are still a part of their everyday working life, but these hours are increasingly remunerated. Thus, the number of overtime hours not remunerated has fallen by 8% over the past two years.
In total, 49% of specialists and executives work overtime. However, the number of remunerated overtime is 30%-35% higher than two years ago. To 21% of respondents, which corresponds to an increase by 3%, overtime is rather an exception.
Employees working more than 50 hours a week are also more and more remunerated for their overtime worked. In this group the amount of remunerated overtime hours has increased by 3% since 2003. In total, 31% of German specialists and executives work more than 50 hours a week.
The international comparison shows that specialists and executives from Scandinavia work the smallest amount of overtime hours. In Denmark 53% of interviewees stated that to them overtime hours are an exception, while 42% of Norwegians said so. At the European level, however, the number of overtime hours worked increased: here 73% of experts and specialists did overtime which is an increase by 4% as compared to 2005.
